CG Dinner Potluck

Our CG gathered for a potluck dinner over the Vesak Day holiday. We were treated to a feast of chilli crab and chicken curry cooked by our beloved CGL. Of course, the others brought stuff like fried beehoon, salad, fried wontons and so on. But the star of the dinner was definitely the chilli crab. Hopefully we get to have it again soon.

Couples Dinner Night

We had three lovely couples at our place for dinner the other night. I was racking my brains as to what to cook for a party of eight and decided that the theme for the night shall be “comfort food”. It was a fairly warm night, which was a shame because the menu would have been terrific if it had been a nice cool evening.

We began the meal with some lovely mushroom soup prepared by my hubby. The soup consisted of a mix of brown and white button mushrooms and portabellos. It was rich and creamy, and the added touch of sour cream was just about [...]

Potato Gnocchi with Pork Mushroom Ragu

To be honest, I was never a fan of gnocchi. I attribute it to a bad gnocchi experience at one of those pasta restaurants that claim to serve “homemade gnocchi”. The gnocchi I tasted back then was dry and bland, hardly worth remembering. Since then, I avoided gnocchi whenever I see it on the menu. My impression of it changed slightly after a meal at a pizza/pasta place in Sorrento, Italy. It was alot tastier, though it was still a tat bit dry. A week ago, I saw a cooking show on Discovery Travel and Living featuring a gnocchi dish. This gnocchi was made of goat cheese and ricotta [...]

Foil baked butter cod with mushrooms

Mid week Wednesday seems to come by so quickly. Instead of the usual eating out on weekdays (since we’re both too tired to cook), I thought that I’d fix something “simple”. Home cooked food is always healthier anyway. We decided on something Japanese, seeing that we had some japanese ingredients that we hadn’t yet used up. Hubby had been craving for cod since last week and so I figured why not? We can simply merge the two ideas together: Japanese and cod. I didn’t have a recipe for this, but I vaguely remember eating something similar at Ichiban Boshi once, and so I decided to experiment.  The result?

Ayam Sambal

This is a really simple peranakan dish, even though it does require the preparation of a rempah. It is simple because, unlike typical rempah dishes, the rempah does not need to be fried before use. It is one of those “combine everything together and cook” dishes. I modified the original recipe, and added galangal and lemon grass to the rempah. I like the fragrance of the galangal, and the slightly citrusy flavour that the lemon grass brings. Since there is no frying involved, the oil from this dish comes from the chicken skin and the coconut milk added. If you are health conscious, the recipe from Mrs Lee’s book [...]

Friends for dinner – french food at home

It has been some time since we had friends over for a nice dinner. After some planning, we finally managed to fix a date where our three lovely couple friends could join us. I spent some time pondering over the dinner menu, and finally came up with the following. It’s a mixture of different kinds of cuisines really. A little bit of spanish, a little western, but mostly french.

For appetiser, we decided to serve up some lovely Jambon Iberico that we had received from a lovely lady we stayed with in France. Jambon iberico comes from the black Iberian Pig. It is very expensive and hence not widely [...]

Dinner at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant

We had a visitor from New Zealand and so decided that an introductory trip to the Singaporean’s favourite dish – Chilli Crab was in due. A friend suggested Jumbo seafood restaurant so off we went. We patronised the branch at Dempsey, seeing this as a wonderful opportunity to introduce this part of Singapore to our guest as well.

Personally, I’ve never been to Jumbo, and so was taken aback to see so many customers that weekday night. Indeed, the restaurant was packed! My hopes at finding good food that night was elevated. We went for a set dinner package for 4 people, so that we could try a variety [...]

Italian Dinner at Valentino’s

Ristorante Da Valentino serves authentic Italian Cuisine. The restaurant is run by an Italian family and they’re good at it. Very good at it. It is one of those fairly cosy establishments that makes you leave with not just a warmth in your stomach, but also a warmth in your heart. Of the couple of times I have been there, the service has always been impeccable. One of my friends, M, absolutely goes gaga over the food whenever we go there. Here’s an idea of the things we like to order.

This mozzarella cheese is an absolute favourite among us. It is different from the usual Caprese that [...]

Home-styled Surf and Turf

My brother-in-law returned from Sydney last week and brought home with him three large flash-boiled lobsters. Seeing that they were fresh and ready for the grill, my sister-in-laws decided to have a surf and turf dinner last week. They cut up the striploin they had purchased from Euraco into thick slabs of steaks. The marbling effect of those steaks were fantastic, and those steaks were simply mouth-watering delicious. It was tender and soft, with just the right amount of fat. We only barely seasoned the meat with some freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt and yet they tasted unbelievable.

With the steaks grilling, we turned our attention [...]

Dinner for two

Hubby decided to do us the honours of cooking dinner two days ago. The resolve was to use up some of the food items in the refrigerator. I had a craving for mushroom soup and seeing that we had some sour cream left in the fridge, J proceeded to whip up a delicious Hungarian mushroom soup. The soup is rather thick and creamy, with a tinge of sweetness from the sauteed onions that he had added into the soup. He usually adds a dash of paprika to the soup, but that day, he didn’t.

Seeing that we still had plenty of sausages left, and some Hokkaido frozen scallops, [...]
